Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)


The Department for International Trade (DIT) promotes British trade and investment around the world; helps to build an appetite for British goods and services globally; and works to encourage foreign investment into the UK.

DIT also brings together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade & investment and to help businesses to succeed.

The DIT team in France comprises 30 people in Paris, Lyon and Bordeaux.

The team works with both French investors and British companies doing business in France across the main business sectors of the economy.

Currently we are looking for a
Market Access and Trade Policy Officer, either located in Paris, Lyon or Bordeaux.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Proactively identify and research the policy background and practical procedures of market access barriers affecting UK exports to France. Ensure that these barriers are accurately reported and that relevant policy leads in the UK Government are aware of the issues you are identifying.
  • Collaborate with sector leads, Embassy colleagues and Whitehall departments to identify and remove trade barriers. Embed a culture of horizon scanning to ensure that upcoming policies and upcoming debates are followed so that the team can work to prevent new trade barriers emerging.
  • Identify key decision makers in government, public bodies, civil society, academia and business, and manage those strategic relationships to support the UK's market bilateral trade policy priorities.
  • Develop and drive influencing strategies to protect and promote market access by establishing direct relationships with relevant authorities and commercial entities and or communicating through others where advantageous.
  • Promote a deep understanding of the policies and procedures which affect UK exporters within the DIT France team.
  • Support on broader trade policy files through research, engagement and reporting.
  • Reactively respond to market access enquires assigned to Team France through the UK's Export Support Service helpline.
  • Work with colleagues across the Embassy to deliver DIT and crossEmbassy priorities and events.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Fluency at C1 level both in English and German or French (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages*);
  • Experience of either working with businesses or in a policy making environment;
  • Knowledge and understanding of French Swiss business and Government;
  • Fast learning, selfstarter who can demonstrate initiative, resilience, and project management skills;
  • Good communicator, written and verbal;
