Description
ArcelorMittal is the world's largest steel producer. We use the most innovative technology to create the steels tomorrow's world will be made of.

Every day over 190,000 of our talented people, located in over 60 countries, push the boundaries of digitalization and use advanced technology to create a world that is stronger, faster and smarter.

To help make this possible, they know they can depend on the support and training that a company of our scope and scale can provide.

The postion is located in the Process Research centre of the ArcelorMittal R&D campus at Maizières-Lès-Metz. New engineer will be integrated in the Surface Engineering team of the Process Engineering department.

The team mission is focused on the optimization and modeling of the steel surface evolution through hot-rolling and pickling process steps within different metallurgical routes.

Decarbonation of the steelmaking process requires mastering of new routes where the understanding of mechanisms of steel oxidation, mechanical and chemical oxide removal are key points to guarantee the quality of our products.

Your role

This engineer position will be focused on experimental and modeling approaches of the surface reactions during hot-rolling and further heat-treatment operations (oxidation, decarburization, surface denaturation, oxidation at grain boundaries) regarding the influence of steel alloying elements, tramp elements and surrounding atmospheres on kinetics of scale growth, its interfacial adherence and removal ways (descaling, pickling, others...).

The simulations will concern physico-chemical mechanisms of oxides formation, thermomechanical aspects of oxide layer adherence on metals, its cracking and decohesion under mechanical loadings in rolling mill environment, as well as chemical and electrochemical reactions of oxides dissolution in acid media.

The mission will be mainly focused on:

  • Characterizaton of metal oxidation and decarburization kinetics, descaling and pickling abilities
  • Analysis of plants metallurgical routes to optimize the process condtions
  • Answering to plants technical requests for process optimization and defectology issues
  • Taking over process models and extend them for new steel generations and process decarbonization
  • Coupling of models by using digitalization tools

Your profile

  • You hold a Masters' degree or a PhD diploma in Material Science, Chemical Science or related areas.
  • First experience in R&D environement will be an asset.
  • You are fluent in French and in English.
  • You are innovative, curious and results oriented.
