“When our days become dreary with low-hovering clouds of despair, and when our nights become darker than a thousand midnights, let us remember that there is a creative force in this universe, working to pull down the gigantic mountains of evil, a power that is able to make a way out of no way and transform dark yesterdays into bright tomorrows."
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
It is quite strange this weather in southern France. In what is our 8th winter here as permanent residents I am surprise at the lack of year to year predictability. In Toronto despite moderate temperature fluctuations one could reliably expect January to be a mix of cold hard ice and snow and cold sloppy slush. In Winnipeg cold and Vancouver rain. Here in the Var region 83 today the wind is howling, the air is warm, the sun is shining but no one is out and about because the wind is too strong. Wind is proven to be hard on the psychology.
I am not riding my bike today because of the wind however due to some smart people at ZWIFT.com I don really care. ZWIFT is a gaming platform for cycling enthusiasts. The game is used by 1000's of cyclist from all over the world to ride and compete simultaneously in a virtual world.
While this might not seem important to you especially when there is so much turmoil in the world it is important to the many that subscribe to ZWIFT (approximately $15.00 per month).
Today I will ride a 40 km virtual race on a virtual course against possibly 100 other very real riders. When I am finished I will share all of my statistics with an ambivalent world. What counts is that I did it and I am pleased, wind free and plugged into a community that thinks like me. If ZWIFT had been available as a cycling training tool when I was younger 1990 to 2000 and a not so serious Ironman Triathlete my overall finishing times could have been 2 or 3 minutes faster LOL Coaching in a virtual world might miss certain nuanced body postures and language but it is an expats dream.
