Objectifs du stage:


Dans le cadre de la simulation de systèmes mécaniques complexes, la détection du contact est un problème difficile de par son impact significatif sur les performances et la précision du résultat final.


Différentes problématiques y sont associées :

détection efficace de la pénétration entre corps, suivi des points contact au cours d'un schéma d'intégration, construction et mise à jour efficace d'un arbre de volumes englobants.


Profil souhaité:


  • Très bon niveau en C++ et Python
  • Bonnes connaissances algorithmiques
  • Une certaine familiarité avec la robotique ou la mécanique multicorps est souhaitable
  • Des connaissances en optimisation numérique et des méthodes d'intégration sont souhaitables
  • Curiosité, dynamisme et intérêt particulier pour le développement logiciel et la simulation numérique

Langue de travail:
anglais impératif et français de préférence.


6 month internship in Lyon (Ansys Villeurbanne)

Internship goals:


When simulating complex mechanical assemblies, contact detection is a challenging problem due to its strong impact on computational performance and accuracy of the end results.

Several issues are related such as efficient detection of interpenetration between bodies, tracking of contact points in the course of an integration scheme, parallelizing the construction of bounding volume hierarchies in an efficient manner.


As part of an R&D project, a novel contact detection library has been developed based on a mesh extrusion technique.

The first results are promising.

The first main goal of the internship is to test and validate thoroughly this prototype on various models encountered in multi-body dynamics.

This work encompasses unit tests and performance benchmarks based on realistic customer models. Changes to the C++ are likely to happen.

As a second step, various extensions are foreseen such as integrating the novel library into a new integration scheme or implementing various of its features on GPU architectures.


Minimum Education/Certification Requirements and Experience

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Applied Mathematics

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Proficient in C++, C and Python
  • Good knowledge of basic algorithms and data structures
  • Interested in robotics or multibody dynamics is a plus
  • Knowledge of numerical optimization and integration methods is a strong plus
  • Proactive and interested in software development and simulation
