Description

SuperGrid Institute Architecture and System program carries out research and development on future power transmission systems based on a combination of AC and DC transmission technologies.

More specifically, the research is focused on multi-terminals HVDC grid for off-shore or continental transmission.

Automation, protection and control strategies are major technical challenges that have to be addressed in order to envisage the evolution of existing HVDC systems into more complex highly meshed multi-terminal HVDC grids.

Architecture and System program comprises four sub-programs: super grid architecture principles study and optimization, super grid protection strategies, super grid control strategies, super grid simulation platform development.

A dedicated real-time simulation laboratory has been created by the latter subprogram to support the research activities of the other teams.

Indeed, for the elaborated automation, protection and control strategies to reach a sufficient technological readiness level, the algorithms can be embedded into industrial hardware and connected to a virtual network simulated in real-time in a so-called hardware-in-the-loop setup (HIL).

The engineering of the automation, protection and control devices for the multi terminal DC grid relies on the implementation of state of the art communication and telecommunication techniques (IEC61850, IEEE C37.118, ).

Future Multi-Terminal DC grids will be coordinated by a fundamental control brick called DC Grid control. SuperGrid Institute is becoming a provider of such DC Grid control. Simulation group have in charge to implement and test in HIL simulation the DC Control functions.

The developed competences and the real-time simulation facilities are used not only to support the internal research roadmap and to carry out collaborative research projects with other organizations, but also to provide services for potential customers in the field of power systems such as HVDC grids or offshore wind farms.

We recruit a research engineer to manage the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test platform through technical improvement, business development and operational activities.
