Role Purpose:


Post Specifics:


Main Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Experimentation to support the University of Leicester Xray optics test campaigns. Develop and execute test plans and analyse data for a range of projects of interest to Photonis.
  • To support metrology measurements and the analysis of metrology data leading to accurate and reliable ray tracing models of optical systems.
  • Building mathematical models of optical systems, compare model data to simulations and produce reports on the measurements.
  • To communicate actively and regularly with the industrial partner and the wider community via presentations at meetings and conferences. To prepare results for publication in peer review journals and present results at appropriate conferences.
  • Develop research in instrumentation and novel ways of using equipment for scientific and commercial projects and publish papers describing the results of this research in peerreviewed publications.

Internal and External Relationships:


  • Liaise with scientific, engineering and technical members of the Department and Space Research Centre in the use of complex scientific equipment and in discussing measurements and results.
  • Liaise directly with Photonis; support technical discussions, reporting progress and results, participating in collaboration meetings in the UK and overseas. Liaise with other associated collaborators.

Planning and Organising:

Plan research activity as outlined in the project proposal, develop rigorous methods for delivering project objectives. Reporting outcomes to stakeholders and to the scientific community.


Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:

Essential

  • PhD in Physics in a relevant research area
  • Experience in data analysis* ideally using modelling/simulation codes
  • Participation in experimental research
  • Proven ability to work on instrumentation projects
Desirable

  • Experience in testing of Xray optics or performing experiments with Xray equipment
  • Experience in experimental test campaigns using vacuum systems or similar equipment
  • Experience in the analysis and interpretation of data from such a campaign
  • Experience in the use of optical design codes (e.g., Zemax)

Skills, Abilities and Competencies:

Essential

  • The ability to carry out independent research and produce published research papers
  • Proven ability to perform experimental work in a research environment
  • Excellent computing skills including programming* (ideally in R, python or Fortran)
  • All Group members are expected to work in a spirit of flexibility, cooperation, and mutual support. Strong interpersonal skills are therefore essential.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel for collaborative visits and conferences.
  • The capability of prioritising work and managing their own time
  • A flexible and adaptable approach to work over a range of duties
  • An ability and willingness to work constructively with the project managers and other research staff and students.

Salary: 42,878.00€ - 49,494.00€ per year
