Research Proposal:

Cultural heritage buildings and artefacts represent a significant part of our history and identity, and their preservation is of paramount importance.

However, traditional fire protection systems, such as sprinklers, can be detrimental to the preservation of these structures and their contents.

Innovative vacuum sprinkler systems have been developed as a potential solution to this problem, as they do not require the presence of water in the pipes during standby mode, reducing the risk of damage from freezing.

The proposed PhD study aims to investigate the effectiveness of vacuum sprinkler systems for the fire protection of cultural heritage.

The study will focus on three main aspects:

  • Characterizing the spray of the vacuum sprinkler system using LDA method. LDA is an advanced technique for measuring the velocity and size of droplets in sprays. The latter will be used to determine the droplet size distribution, velocity, and spray pattern of the vacuum sprinkler system under different operating conditions.
  • Assessing the performance of the vacuum sprinkler system through full-scale fire tests in a scale 1/8 mock-up of the room a cultural heritage building (Castle of Chambord). The fire tests will be conducted in a controlled laboratory environment and will allow for the evaluation of the system's ability to suppress a fire in a realistic setting and to measure key performance indicators such as fire growth, heat release rate, and gas temperature. This task will be completed a parametric study using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) using the available code FDS.
  • Studying the spatial distribution of velocity and fire development using PIV. PIV is a non-intrusive method that uses a laser light sheet to illuminate the flow and a camera to capture images of the flow. The images will be processed to extract the velocity field and temperature field of the fire, providing a detailed understanding of the behavior of the fire in the presence of the vacuum sprinkler system.
