General Description
Principle Power Inc.

(PPI) is looking to fill a full-time position for a Senior R&D Engineer with a Naval Architecture focus in one of our offices located in Lisbon, Portugal or Aix-en-Provence, France.

The open position is set to be in the Technology Group of the company; a senior, small, dynamic, and diverse environment with the primary goal to qualify and mature innovative designs for the future of the WindFloat product line.

This position will be a senior technical member of the organization focused on developing the next generation of WindFloat Products in line with our Company Technology Roadmap.


This person must have extensive experience designing floating offshore structures and their direct work will lead to step-changing innovations in design, performance, and ultimately the cost of the WindFloat product line in future projects for next generation wind turbines.


Main Accountabilities

  • New product designs and concepts for next generation Wind Turbines (20MW+). This includes idea generation, work planning, numerical modeling, and qualification and patenting of new concepts.
  • Design and Analysis tasks for new concepts: including Hull global sizing based, Stability analysis, and Global performance analysis including Design Load Case philosophy, motion analysis, airgap analysis and load calculations.
  • Perform multiparameter optimization sweeps of new concept performance and report/plot results for internal decision gates
  • Internal engineering interface with Structures, Marine Systems, Mooring/Cables and Installation disciplines. External interface with wind turbine manufacturers, Classification Societies, and Clients
  • Develop tools and workflows to optimize earlystage design methods used to assess floating systems
  • Preparing technical reports based on naval architectural principles
  • ApprovalinPrinciple and Patent development
  • Interface with drafters to produce packages of drawings for certification and fabrication
  • Represent company for Naval Architecture and Global Performance R&D and Product Development related matters

Skills & Competencies

  • Minimum ten (10) years of professional experience in the naval architectural design and analysis of floating offshore structures. Preference is given to those with experience designing semisubmersible structures and floating offshore wind foundations
  • Proven technical skills in the field of hydrodynamics and aerodynamics. Knowledge of structure dynamics and/or mooring systems is an advantage
  • Minimum eight (8) years of professional experience working with hydrodynamics and aerodynamics tools such as Rhino, Orca3D, WAMIT, OrcaFlex and openFAST or equivalent softwares.
  • Experience in conceptselection and preFEED stages of major projects, specifically in offshore semisubmersible structures
  • Experience in earlystage idea generation seeking AIP for new designs and patents for new inventions
  • Firm and practical knowledge of class standards and relevant regulations (ABS, BV, DNV, and/or API)
  • Experience in one (1) or more programming languages (Matlab, Python, VBA) with the ability to code simulation wrappers and postprocessing tools
  • Strong technical and big data analysis skills with the ability to analyze, sort, and ingest operational data into simulation engines
  • Proficiency in English, both oral and written skills, is essential
  • Outstanding organizational skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Display excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work with colleagues in a positive and collaborative manner
  • Possess the ability to work independently; is selfdirected and motivated
  • Proven experience working in multidisciplinary environments within a global context
  • Strong time management skills
