Main Goal:

Lead our barley breeding programs in Europe and coordinate our barley research activity globally.

These responsibilities include the coordination of different breeding projects with already established breeding teams spread over different countries in North and central Europe.

It will also work with business and research teams in other territories to coordinate research efforts to identify and exploit opportunities in other markets.

The position reports to Global Head of Cereals and Pulses Research.

The position will be an integral member of both the global cereals and pulses research management team and North American leadership committee team.


Job description:

Research and Development Strategy

  • Act as a member of Limagrain's global cereals and pulses management team
  • Animate the barley breeding and research teams to facilitate development of innovative breeding strategies by utilizing company technology and germplasm
  • Define the short, medium and longterm breeding and portfolio objectives with breeders, product development and commercial teams
  • Develop a deep understanding of the barley industry and the business, interacting with relevant internal and external stakeholders to help promote our research and products
  • Propose collaborations and exchanges with third parties in compliance with company policy
  • Ensure compliance with Limagrain germplasm FTO requirements in conjunction with global germplasm management systems
  • Develop and implement a coordinated global barley research strategy with local research and business teams
Operations

  • Evolve, develop and implement breeding strategy through the different barley breeding programs and broader research organization
  • Drive the optimal use of efficient breeding innovations (statistical designs, molecular technology etc)
  • Ensure the protection of barley varieties in close collaboration with the global Germplasm Officer
  • Propose and manage the global barley research budget, resources of the research team and (MTP) midterm plan, ensuring budget compliance and efficient resource allocation for projects and programs.
People Management and Leadership

  • Shape and promote a positive work culture and actively develop the research team in collaboration with the BU and global research human resources teams
  • Develop close relationships with breeders, platform managers and research managers in all territories of the cereals and pulses community
General Management

  • Act and advocate as a member of Cereals and Pulses Management committees, representing the barley research team
  • Ensure research team compliance to company and local government safety regulations.

Experience & Educational Requirements:
A doctorate's degree in crop science, plant genetics or agronomy is required

A minimum of 5 years' experience within plant breeding, field trials, or related field is desired, in a multinational and/or private and matrixed organization with significant leadership and executive management experience is preferred

A deep knowledge of how agriculture-for-development proceeds and the requirements of stakeholders

An ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally.

The location of this position could be on Chappes research center or on barley research stations in Europe.
