    Offer Description

Nowadays a huge demand for solid cosmetics is observed in the cosmetic market in order to limit bulky packaging containing aqueous dispersions and tend towards the "zero waste". In the same time, multifunctional products able to be both make-up and skincare products are very attractive since they allow simplified formulations. Furthermore, there is a groundswell of interest for bio-based products as alternative to mineral ones such as talc, mica, silica, widely used as additives to improve the dispersibility and spreadability of cosmetics on the skin as well as to absorb sweat and sebum.

In this context, we aimed to rationalize talc or silicates-containing products in face compacts and to develop new powdered compacts containing a limited number of ingredients in the formulation and a high level of biopolymers (polysaccharides) having similar properties (serving as bulky agent, preventing caking, assuring the flowability and dispersibility during the manufacturing process, compaction behavior, improving skin feeling, adhesiveness to the skin, sebum absorption, skin hydration, light or full skin coverage) as inorganic additives. Then the project concerns the development of a bio-based simple face-compact powder formulation containing an active agent.

Chitosan was selected for replacing inorganic additives in the formulation. It is a linear polysaccharide composed of b-(1-4)-linked D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine units. Chitosan has become a highlighted biopolymer gaining paramount importance and research attention since its numerous properties, i.e non-toxic, water-soluble, biodegradable, biocompatible, antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidant. Chitosan has many applications in biomedical, cosmetics, food additives and water treatment fields. The capacity of chitosan to bind water is a key factor for skin and hair applications, and its antimicrobial activity reinforces the interest of its application in cosmetic formulations, allowing the reduction of preservatives. This natural polysaccharide is industrially obtained by N-deacetylation of chitin, which is the second most abundant biopolymer in biomass, mainly present in crustacean and insect exoskeletons. The exploitation and utilization of chitin resources from sea food industry wastes is of great significance to environmental protection, economic development and sustainable development. The chemical functional groups of D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine units, the primary amine group of D-glucosamine units, as well as the hydroxyl groups, will be used for the grafting of anti-aging active substances.

Five steps will be considered in this project. First, we will study the grafting reactions of the active substances with the primary amine group of D-glucosamine units and/or the hydroxyl groups of repeat units. Second, binder will be selected among natural polymers, organic solvents, oily esters and surfactants. Then formulations of the powder composed of the active agent-grafted chitosan and binder (and eventually pigments) will be performed according to three methods (simple mixing, wet granulation processing, Pickering emulsions). The formulated powder will be compacted by using two compaction processes, i.e. i) molding and shaping by applying one-sided pressure, and ii) Spray drying technique. Finally the sensory of the compacts will be evaluated by panelist of 10 persons and percutaneous penetration of active ingredients will be determined by Franz cell method.
