Context:
Dip-coating processes involve covering an object with a thin liquid layer through immersion in a bath and controlled removal at specific speeds and trajectories. The control of layer thickness is influenced by previous steps and fluid rheology, impacting the final properties of the object.
Lost-foam casting, utilized in the production of advanced engines at Stellantis, incorporates this coating method, where a polystyrene model is coated with a particle suspension. This technique allows for gas release from polystyrene decomposition while retaining the poured liquid metal.
The behavior of the suspensions' rheology significantly influences the quality of the final object surfaces.
Goals and planning:
The primary objective of this PhD thesis is to comprehend, predict, and adjust the deposited thicknesses on complex geometries by manipulating bath rheology and object removal techniques.
The research will involve an experimental and theoretical approach to understand the mechanisms and instabilities when objects are coated with yield stress fluids and when they are immersed and removed using model geometries such as spheres and plaques. The experimental setup will include a laboratory robot arm for precise bath removal, laser distance sensors for thickness measurements, and cameras for flow characterizations.
Numerical simulations will be used to model the flow of the layers, with a focus on extending the approach to more intricate geometries and trajectories, aiming for real-time computing and application in industrial processes.
The project will be based at the Center for Material Forming (Cemef) of Ecole des Mines de Paris – PSL University in Sophia Antipolis, France, with planned collaboration with Stellantis. The candidate will work within the Cemef Computing and Fluids research team.
