About the Role


As Legal Counsel in the EMEA Advisory Team you will provide legal services pertaining to the day to day operations of Swiss Re in France and across the EMEA region, with a strong focus on reinsurance business.

This involves identifying, managing and controlling legal risks, implementing efficient legal processes, and establishing and maintaining relationships with internal partners and management as well as external partners, authorities and regulators.


Your primary focus will be on the local teams and clients in France, but you will also support locations, markets and teams in the wider EMEA region.

The scope of work will be very broad, spanning operating platform, general reinsurance advisory, structured reinsurance transactions and advice on (often tech-enabled) client service offerings.


Your key clients in this role will include:

  • Country President(s)/ Location Head(s) and local operations
  • Business teams, for general reinsurance advisory matters as well as structured reinsurance transactions and feebased client service offerings
  • Local French Management Team

You will be expected to:

  • Be a trusted partner to your clients, providing timely, quality legal advice and clearly articulating legal risks and opportunities
  • Negotiate, draft and review a wide range of agreements (e.g. in the areas of general commercial, real estate and environmental, cooperation/partnership, technology, distribution and reinsurance solutions)
  • Provide legal and regulatory advice on reinsurance matters and the origination, development and structuring of structured reinsurance transactions and feebased (often techenabled) client service offerings
  • Provide support to specialist Legal & Compliance teams on matters of local French law and regulation e.g. corporate governance, insolvency, dispute resolution, compliance
  • Conduct legal research, perform legal risk analysis, and clearly present findings
  • Lead and collaborate on the legal aspects of projects and strategic initiatives, working together with Legal & Compliance colleagues and other functions
  • Actively manage potential legal risks, including monitoring legal developments, actioning changes, and providing training and reporting
  • Support the handling of disputes and local investigations
  • Represent Swiss Re on/ towards relevant industry bodies and local regulatory authorities
  • Manage outside legal counsel, including instructing and relationship management

About the team


We are a multi-jurisdictional team composed of legal counsels based in locations across EMEA, coordinating and providing legal support to our operations and reinsurance business activities in the region.


Our team is part of the Legal Reinsurance EMEA team, the wider Reinsurance Legal team and the Legal & Compliance Division and you will report to the Head of EMEA Advisory, based in Zurich.


About You
- (Re)insurance (both L&H and P&C), ideally including structured reinsurance solutions/transactions

  • Company law and corporate governance matters
  • Property and real estate matters
  • International experience
  • You speak and draft fluently in both French and English, and ideally also speak other European languages.
  • You have strong research, drafting and negotiation skills (legal advice, opinions, contractual documents, etc). You are experienced in case/ project management. You have excellent presentation, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • You enjoy working on multiple projects in parallel and coordinating complex assignments across multidisciplinary teams and multiple jurisdictions. You are confident to venture into and advise on new areas of law/ foreign jurisdictions.
  • You are driven to support and empower the business while safeguarding sound governance standards.
  • You are confident to drive matters independently. You demonstrate leadership and accountability, and resilience and flexibility when facing challenges. You are fully reliable, responsive and have high energy. You are openminded, collaborative, and act with utmost integrity.
