Internship - Develop An Immersive Virtual Reality - Versailles, France - UNIVERSITÉ GUSTAVE EIFFEL
Description
Develop an immersive virtual reality visit of a district with multimodal transportation model and panoramic street views
Context
Building Information Management (BIM) is more and more widely used in architectural projects, allowing sharing data about the buildings and the neighborhood.
Although Virtual Reality allows people to immerse into urban environments, it remains little used in architectural and city design activities.
In line with research activities conducted at Université Gustave Eiffel, we want to simulate people mobility in cities of the future in virtual reality.
An early work on such a simulation was conducted in the context of the "E3S program"[1]which is composed of eight research projects on urban innovation.
This digital twin of LaVallée was built using its architectural data (BIM files), was then integrated with Unreal Engine and has been used for research on architectural ambiances.
Research and development mission of the internship:
This internship is an adaptation of this work to a different district, with different software and with other type of data.
One of the objectives is to explore the possibilities provided with a combination of various data and software. Autodesk Revit can be used to import and manage BIM files (i.e., the description of each building).ArcGIS CityEngine specializes in the generation of 3D urban environments using a procedural modeling approach and is capable to work with BIM files.
The functionalities of these programs can be combined. We can hence create a framework to produce virtual environments that copy current and future districts. In order to be able to estimate the validity of the results in a project situation, we want to:
Build the digital twin of a large part of Paris Saclay University (or Versailles if data are available)
Visualize details of the district in 3D in an immersive virtual visit with virtual reality glasses or in a CAVE environment (i.e., with big screens)
-
Add panoramic views to the UE scene (StreetView functionality) for the buildings already built
One extension of the internship will be to populate the simulated environment by integrating animated 3D people in the 3D scene using Unity functionalities.
This step is necessary to prepare a future study comparing virtual reality sensation to real experience of the environment (in a collaboration with University of La Laguna).
