    The International Potato Center (CIP) is searching for a dynamic and driven Senior Scientist to lead a sweetpotato breeding program and supervise breeding activities in West Africa.

    Position Overview: The chosen candidate will develop and execute a sweetpotato breeding program and coordinate a network focused on serving the sweetpotato market in West Africa. Working closely with local partners such as CGIAR and NARES institutions, the selected candidate will initiate a breeding and evaluation program aimed at delivering superior varieties to drive quick adoption by farmers. Based in one of our West Africa offices, the Sweetpotato Breeder Senior Scientist will establish and manage the program and breeding network, contributing to the global breeding team and reporting to the CIP Africa breeding lead.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead and oversee sweetpotato breeding programs, emphasizing on developing high-yielding, disease-resistant, and climate-resilient varieties.
    • Collaborate with local and international research bodies, farmers, and stakeholders to ensure the acceptance of new varieties.
    • Perform genetic analysis and utilize modern breeding techniques like marker-assisted selection and genomic tools.
    • Collect, analyze, and interpret data to guide breeding decisions and strategies.
    • Publish research outcomes in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at scientific conferences.
    • Mentor and train junior scientists, technicians, and students in sweetpotato breeding techniques.
    • Work closely with CIP's social scientists, economists, and gender specialists to refine Product Profiles and Market Segments served.
    • Maintain updated estimates of genetic gains.
    • Represent the sweetpotato breeding program in internal and external meetings, ensuring visibility of progress through engagement with the communications team.
    • Establish and manage the West Africa sweetpotato breeding network.
    • Coordinate yearly planning and review of breeding pipelines.
    • Organize product advancement meetings.
    • Identify and develop research ideas for resource mobilization.
    • Support partners' workplans, budgets, and collaborative research efforts.
    • Foster research collaborations within SSA.
    • Build connections among various partners to enhance the breeding program's effectiveness.
    • Manage the sweetpotato breeding budget and allocations.

    Requirements:

    • PhD degree in Plant Breeding or related Crop Sciences with a minimum of 10 years of active crop breeding experience.
    • 8 years of international breeding program involvement, with a preference for prior experience in clonal crop breeding in Africa.
    • Proficient in leading and nurturing multidisciplinary teams, conveying a shared vision, and engaging with diverse stakeholders.
    • Sound knowledge of variety release processes.

    Skills:

    • Effective leadership skills.
    • Track record of managing diverse teams and partnerships and securing funding.
    • Strong communication abilities in English and ideally in another local language.
