Apprentice - Mechanical Engineering

Context

Imagine working at the cutting edge of scientific excellence in Europe The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), based in Grenoble, France, is a leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons, hosting over 2000 scientists per year who come to carry out experiments.

Do you aspire to work in a multicultural environment? Are you ready to take on technical challenges which have a tangible impact on the world of science and technology?

Get stuck in and join the ILL's Advanced Neutron Environment Service (SANE), responsible for the development, maintenance and user support for equipment for cryogenics, intense magnetic fields, high temperature and high pressure.

Your tasks
You'll join a multidisciplinary 15-person team, contributing throughout the whole development process for new pieces of equipment.

Depending on project progress and your specific skills, your main duties will be to:

  • Participate in designing high-pressure sample cells, capable of withstanding extreme pressure and temperature conditions (up to bar and 30 mK)
  • Validate these designs by simulating their performance, thereby ensuring safety and efficacy
  • In collaboration with the team and subcontractors, coordinate the manufacture, planning, monitoring of manufacture (traceability) and resolution of technical issues
  • Ensure that the final products comply with the required quality and safety standards.

Your profile

  • You are in your second/third year of study for a Level 6 qualification (undergraduate degree or equivalent) in mechanical and production engineering (or equivalent) requiring a work/study contract.
  • You have skills in CAD software (SolidWorks) and a keen interest in mechanical design and production.
  • Skills in computer simulation would be an advantage.
  • You should have excellent teamwork skills and also be capable of working independently.
  • You are motivated to contribute to all phases of a project and have a thirst for knowledge.
  • You are passionate about mechanical engineering and wish to provide practical solutions to technical challenges.
  • Knowledge of English is required (reading and writing technical documentation).
