OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST Long Description

The World Heritage Cities Programme is one of six thematic programmes formally approved and monitored by the World Heritage Committee.

The programme assists States Parties in the challenges of protecting and managing their urban heritage and integrating with sustainable urban development.

The programme includes communication and exchange across more than 300 World Heritage cities, the development of guidance and good practices around urban heritage conservation.

Using the 2011 UNESCO Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape as a tool, the programme focuses on innovative solutions, strategies and building capacities through collaboration and co-learning, as well as mapping and analysis of urban forms.

The UNESCO Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL Recommendation) was adopted by the 36th Session of the UNESCO General Conference in 2011, and it presents an innovative integrated approach to urban conservation.
