Job purpose


The Group Controlling Area Manager for European Markets is responsible for monitoring management performance and financial targets setting for the 6 AXA European entities (AXA Switzerland, AXA Germany, AXA UK & Ireland, AXA Belgium & Luxembourg, AXA Spain, AXA Italy) and AXA Life Europe-cooperating with local Top Management (CFOs, Business UnitsHeads, Heads of Controlling) and central functions (GCD, PBRC, GRM/GIO, DCFG, COO, GUO) - and reporting monthly to the Group CFO, Group CEO and the Management Committee.

  • Management of (i) 4 business and finance associates and (ii) 1 intern
  • Direct impact on local controlling and reporting teams (c. 100+ people)

Context & major challenges

The major recurring challenges lie in:

  • Establishing and nurturing a strong and trusted link with the different business units ' management teams, understanding their respective strategic, operational and financial challenges
  • Coordinating with the various central teams, notably Finance, European Markets (notably CEO and CFO), Risk Management, Strategy, capital management or COO
  • Selecting the relevant facts, successes and key risks as well as summarizing key actions taken by the BUs to the Group Senior Management
  • Striking the right balance between demanding and reasonable objectives and supporting entities in their delivery where possible
The coming years are particularly challenging for this job as

  • The scope contains highly diversified activities and realities, e.g. in terms of business/products (Life/P&C/Health), customer profiles ( Retail/Commercial Lines), distribution channels (brokers, direct, banks) requiring strong technical skills and transversal knowledge.
  • The scope is expected to deliver attractive earnings growth despite the maturity of the markets and the gradual reduction in investment income, requiring e.g. to ensure strong discipline on efficiency, pursued effort in Life inforce transformation, and increased technical profitability in P&C and Health.
  • The scope will face significant strategic challenges given the competitive nature of all markets, e.g. on the future of Motor Retail, the pressure on pricing etc.
Finally, given the importance of the European Markets scope in the overall Group dynamic, the European Market Group Controlling team plays a central /leading role in Group transversal financial processes (e.g. consolidated budget, strategic plan etc.)


Key accountabilities

Managing and developing his direct team as well as the impact on the BU controlling and reporting team organization (c.

100+ people):

Regular business performance monitoring through a holistic approach encompassing Financial KPIs (e.g. Gross Revenues, Underlying Earnings), business specific KPIs (e.g. Motor claims frequency / average costs, APE), customer KPIs (e.g. NPS, net inflows )

  • Driving a Monthly Business Reviews with each business unit, coordinating various Central (GCD, GIA, PBRC )
  • Reviewing and challenging reforecasts prepared by each operating entity

Financial target setting through

  • Proposing pretargets to the Management Committee for the various business units based on centrally run topdown projections
  • Elaborating budget proposition for the Management Committee by Business Unit based on bottomup projections

Maintaining a sufficiently deep business intelligence for each Business Unit on its competitive environment, regulatory framework changes

  • Delivering on agile
    reporting tools impacting all controlling teams throughout the Group
  • Performing regular
    strategic competitive analyses of AXA vs.
its key competitors and sharing it with the
Group Senior Management (MC, Partners) and the Group Board of Directors:
