Detailed description of the internship:
The ultrasonic echo signal magnitude varies according to the reflecting material.
The goal of this internship is to study the feasibility and proceed with the development of an algorithm that can distinguish different floor types apart such as tile floors, carpets, grass, rocks or sand, using range and amplitude information from one or multiple ultrasound sensor(s) on the edge of a robot, facing the ground.
The intern will learn how to setup and collect data with CHX01 sensors, they will be guided to identify the best fitting height and angle to place the sensor(s) in order to optimize the data, develop an algorithm in C or python based on observations made from data collected with different floor types to detect them, evaluate performances and produce a live demo for real time experimentation.
In summary, this internship provides the intern experience with all essential steps of the conception and deployment of a data acquisition and data processing algorithm in a customer product.
Tasks:
- Learning: get familiar with ultrasound sensor hardware.
- Learning: get familiar with existing inhouse algorithms.
- Characterization: database collection and annotation.
- Implementation: prototype solution using Python or C.
- Evaluation: classification accuracy, false detection rate, memory consumption, response latency.
- Evaluation: Describe limitations of the applied solution.
Required skills:
Programming in C/Python/MATLAB. Good knowledge of signal processing and problem-solving skills. Desire for running experiments with sensor prototypes. Pragmatic mindset, autonomy and creativity are paramount skills for this challenging problem.
