Your work environment

Context

As part of the recent change of organization in the risk and technical functions at corporate center level, a chief UW role has been created at the regional EM&H level.

In strong partnership with Group Chief Underwriting Officer, the main purpose of the Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) is to define and drive the underwriting strategy and guidelines within EU&H, to support the entities in the delivery of the Group's underwriting strategy and objectives and support the growth agenda.

Beyond setting targets, the CUO will monitor progress and support the local entities and the health unit to ensure sound and profitable developments.

The activity of the EM&H CUO will be structured around three pillars:

  • Portfolio management : ensure that technical margins are kept under control, any deviation anticipated and remediated.
  • Technical agenda : ensure that all entities have an ambitious technical excellence agenda, on the whole value chain, to support long term profitable growth.
  • Animate ad hoc projects, at entity level (for instance technical deep dive, support to product development, analysis of new market entry ) or transversally (for instance management of inflation, claims, cat nat pricing )

The CUO plays a key role in facilitating the interactions between the EM&H entities, and the corporate center on all technical matters.

The CUW will be part of the Group UW office leadership team with whom he will partner on pricing and UW topics, partner in the identification of technical Deep Dives, Rapid Reviews, IDR, GUC referrals and new opportunities, etc, and more generally drive the engagement across the organization and within the Entities.

The CUO will also play an active role in the communities.

The CUO will be assisted by two UW officers.

Those experienced experts will support the deployment of the UW agenda across all branches (PC retail, PC commercial, Life individual, EB, Health) and all entities (Ireland, UK, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain).

One UW officer will focus on Life & Health while the other one will focus on PC, with possibility down the road to progressively mix the responsibilities to enlarge the width of their respective technical skills.

Primary responsibilities

  • Identify potential technical issues through portfolio management monitoring relying on existing processes, in coordination with Finance teams
  • Monitor technical profitability / risk / volatility across business segments
  • Contribute to the setting of technical profitability targets at countries' level
  • Design and consolidate countries' reporting on all relevant technical matters (e.g., on tariff slope / churn, claims leakage, claims inflation, losses )
  • Ensure a detailed vision of the technical excellence agenda to be executed by entities, help identify best practice sharing opportunities, track roll out and benefits of initiatives.
  • On an ad hoc basis, directly manage on behalf the CUW technical projects with entities or corporate center teams. According to the topic, the UW officer can intervene to review or may also directly participate.

Examples of potential technical topics :
new offer or service, technical turnaround plan, analysis of M&A target

  • Support the CUW in the cascading throughout EM&H of the instructions and guidance set by the Group UW office.

In practice, the CUW will rely on a network of technical leaders across the region to drive the technical agenda.

Each UW officer will coordinate one or several technical excellence committees, chaired by the CUW and including key representatives of entities, with the objective to coordinate efficiently the agenda across the region.

Contemplated committees :
