- Your key mission will be to conduct desk-based risk analyses and develop loss estimates of key AXA XL insured and prospect customers, with a strong focus on the flood risks (riverine, pluvial, costal). To this aim, you will work closely with AXA XL account engineers and underwriters throughout all aspects of the natural hazards risk quantification process, and you will use a mix of scientific sources and proprietary risk analysis tools, developed by the NatCat and Geospatial Solutions team.
- You will contribute to the continuous development of the existing tools and the enhancement of current processes, to increase automation and improve reliability. You will also contribute to the development of innovative AXA XL NatCat tools and risk modelling approaches, in collaboration with AXA innovation teams and external academic partners.
- As a member of the Natural Catastrophes and Geospatial Solutions team, you will jointly meet with clients and brokers to collect needs, develop and deliver risk consulting services. You will contribute building credibility with and creating customer satisfaction by demonstrating the value of risk control services.
- Your work will mostly be desk-based. Occasionally, Risk Consulting services will need to be verified through on-site visits, or physical meetings with international teams will be required. Thus, you will need to be prepared to spend some time travelling.
- You will be sharing your knowledge and expertise with colleagues who are interested in learning about flood and natural catastrophes in general. You will be working with our Technical Center Manager to develop and deliver specifically designed training material and/or classes.
- You will be working in compliance with our technical rules and guidelines. For this, you will be working closely with our regional and country managers.
- You will report to the global Head of Natural Catastrophes and Geospatial Solutions, with a transversal report to the Head of Risk Consulting France.
- Bachelor's degree or, preferably, Master's degree - or equivalent - in Engineering, Natural Sciences, or Physics. The preferred educational background is civil engineering, maritime engineering, or environmental engineering, with a focus on hydraulics, hydrology, fluid dynamics, or other subjects related to inland, or coastal, flood risks.
- Excellent understanding of science underlying floods and natural hazards' risk assessment is a key requirement.
- Relevant work experience in (re)insurance, risk consulting, risk engineering, civil engineering, construction, or natural catastrophes is considered a plus.
- Working knowledge of NatCat exposures using various models such as NATHAN and CATNET and/or catastrophe models is considered a plus.
- Knowledge of flood models/hazard maps from major vendors (JBA, Fathom, Deltares, Reor20) and/or hydraulic simulation software (HEC-RAS, FloodModeller, or equivalent) is considered a plus.
- Knowledge of programming in R, Python, or equivalent is considered a plus.
- Experience in visualising geospatial data (ArcGIS/QGIS, or equivalent) is considered a plus.
- Analytical and data driven mindset: ability to process and understand data quickly and creatively, ideally be able to demonstrate innovative applications and solutions for risk assessment.
- Excellent communication skills: the ability to explain technical data in simpler language and communicate effectively with a broad range of underwriting and customer partners are essential.
- Self-motivated and able to work autonomously on routinary tasks, while demonstrating the ability to work in a team and curiosity to learn new topics, being motivated to grow within a global market leader.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Availability for occasional travels (including abroad) – approximately 10-15%.
- Full proficiency in English - other languages are a plus.

The NatCat Risk Consultant role is embedded in the Risk Consulting team of AXA XL, the division of AXA XL supporting Underwriters and Clients in the identification, evaluation, anticipation, and prevention of their risks.

Reporting to the Head of Natural Catastrophes and Geospatial Solutions, this role will join a multicultural team of 10 risk experts, located in 5 countries, in charge of analysing all the aspects of natural catastrophes and physical climate change and developing innovative tools for underwriters and customers.
More specifically, the role will be in charge of conducting flood risks analyses of AXA XL customers and prospects, as a support to the underwriting decision-making process, while also servicing customers and contributing to the development of innovative flood risk assessment tools, in collaboration with AXA Innovation teams.
